Will I be able to return to work?

Most people are able to return to work after ICD implantation. The timing depends on the type of work you do, how you are recovering, and whether your underlying condition places any restrictions on specific activities. Desk-based and office work can often be resumed within a few weeks. Manual work, driving for work, or jobs involving heavy machinery may require a longer period of recovery or specific clearance from your cardiologist.

Your employer has a duty to make reasonable adjustments during your return to work. Occupational health can play a useful role in facilitating this. If you are self-employed or have concerns about your entitlement, Citizens Advice or your trade union can provide guidance. You can also read more in our guide to returning to work after cardiac arrest.
