Glossary: Atrial Fibrillation [AF]
The most common sustained heart rhythm disorder, caused by disorganised electrical impulses in the atria producing an irregular, often fast heartbeat. Significantly increases stroke risk, requiring anticoagulation for most patients. Can precipitate ventricular fibrillation in Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Treated with rate control, rhythm control, or both.
