Heart-Lung Bypass

« Back to Glossary Index

A technique employed for nearly all open heart operations by which the circulation is supported by a machine. The machine takes over the function of both the heart and the lungs (the ‘heartlung bypass machine’), while the surgeon opens the heart to perform an operation inside it (see ‘Open Heart Operation’ And ‘Bypass Operation’).
