Medical alert identification refers to wearable items such as bracelets, necklaces, or wallet cards that communicate a person’s critical medical information to emergency responders and healthcare staff. In a medical emergency where the individual cannot speak for themselves, medical alert ID enables responders to act quickly and safely.
For cardiac arrest survivors, medical alert ID is particularly important for those with an ICD or pacemaker, a channelopathy such as Long QT Syndrome, medication dependencies, or drug allergies. Information typically includes diagnosis, implanted device type, key medications, allergies, and emergency contact details.
Major UK providers include MedicAlert Foundation (which links to a central medical records service), SOS Talisman, and NHS-provided cards for specific conditions. Some ICD manufacturers also provide wallet cards confirming device make, model, and implant date. Survivors should ask their Cardiac Nurse Specialist whether wearing medical alert identification is recommended for their condition.
