Memory Aids and Compensatory Strategies

« Back to Glossary Index

Memory aids and compensatory strategies are practical tools and techniques used to manage memory difficulties, rather than relying solely on improving the underlying memory deficit. They are particularly relevant for cardiac arrest survivors who have experienced hypoxic brain injury resulting in working memory problems or broader cognitive impairment.

Common memory aids include: diaries and structured planners, smartphone reminders and calendar alerts, notebooks kept in a consistent location, whiteboards or notice boards for important information, and voice recorders for capturing conversations or instructions. Compensatory strategies include routines (doing tasks in the same order every time), chunking information into smaller units, repetition and rehearsal, and asking for written summaries of appointments or discussions.

These tools are taught and personalised within cognitive rehabilitation programmes, delivered by neuropsychologists and occupational therapists. The goal is not to replace memory function but to reduce the impact of memory difficulties on daily life, confidence, and independence. Family members and carers can play an important role in helping to implement and maintain these strategies consistently.
