Benefits and Financial Support After Cardiac Arrest

« Back to Glossary Index

Cardiac arrest survivors may be unable to work during recovery or may have long-term limitations that affect their earning capacity. Several benefits and financial support schemes are available through the UK benefits system.

Key benefits to consider include: Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or the equivalent Universal Credit Limited Capability for Work element, for those unable to work; Personal Independence Payment (PIP), for those with ongoing physical or cognitive difficulties affecting daily living or mobility (note: Personal Independence Payment is available regardless of employment status or savings); and Access to Work, a grant scheme supporting employed people with disabilities or health conditions.

Entitlement to benefits depends on National Insurance contribution history, savings, household income, and the nature and severity of ongoing difficulties. Cognitive difficulties, fatigue, and autonomic dysfunction are all legitimate grounds for a PIP claim alongside physical limitations.

Citizens Advice and specialist disability benefits advisers can help navigate the claims process, including mandatory reconsiderations and appeals if claims are initially refused. The disability charity Scope and Turn2us (turn2us.org.uk) offer benefits calculators and adviser networks. Your Cardiac Nurse Specialist can provide supporting letters for benefit applications.
