Post-resuscitation Care

« Back to Glossary Index

The medical care provided after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) following cardiac arrest, typically in an intensive care unit. The goals of post-resuscitation care are to stabilise the patient, identify and treat the underlying cause of the arrest, limit further organ injury (particularly to the brain), and support recovery. Key components include targeted temperature management, continuous monitoring, coronary angiography if a cardiac cause is suspected, and neurological assessment to guide prognosis. The quality of post-resuscitation care has a major influence on survival and the degree of neurological recovery.
