A shock delivered by an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) in response to a genuine life-threatening arrhythmia, such as ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT). An appropriate shock means the device has correctly detected and treated a dangerous heart rhythm. Receiving an appropriate shock can be a frightening experience, and psychological support is often recommended afterwards.
