A wearable external defibrillator vest worn directly against the skin, designed to monitor the heart continuously and deliver a shock if a life-threatening arrhythmia is detected. Often prescribed as a temporary measure — for example, while a patient is being assessed for a permanent ICD, or during a period of recovery after a heart attack when ICD eligibility is uncertain. The most widely used brand is the LifeVest. The WCD does not require bystander intervention to deliver therapy.
