Shared Decision Making

« Back to Glossary Index

A collaborative approach to healthcare in which clinicians and patients work together to make decisions about treatment and management plans. Rather than clinicians simply prescribing a course of action, shared decision making involves discussing the options, evidence, risks, and benefits, and taking into account the patient’s values, preferences, and life circumstances. For ICD patients, shared decision making is particularly important around decisions such as ICD implantation, device deactivation, and advance care planning.
