A shock delivered by an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) when no life-threatening arrhythmia is actually present. Causes include the device misreading a fast but non-dangerous heart rhythm (such as sinus tachycardia), electrical noise from a damaged lead, or T-wave oversensing. Inappropriate shocks are physically and psychologically distressing and can lead to anxiety and reduced quality of life. If you receive a shock that you believe may have been inappropriate, contact your device clinic promptly.
