A planned surgical procedure to replace the pulse generator (battery unit) of an ICD or pacemaker when its battery reaches end of service. The leads are usually left in place and reconnected to the new generator. The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthetic and is much less complex than the original implant. Battery longevity varies by device and how often it delivers therapy, but most ICD generators last 5–10 years.
