Cardiac Device and Airport Security

« Back to Glossary Index

People with implanted cardiac devices including ICDs and pacemakers are generally safe to travel through airports, but need to be aware of security screening procedures. Modern implanted devices are not triggered by standard walk-through metal detectors or airport body scanners, and the devices themselves are not adversely affected by the security process.

However, there are some practical considerations. Walk-through metal detectors and body scanners should not cause device interference at normal transit speeds, but if you are held in a metal detector longer than a few seconds (for example during a prolonged security check), step through rather than remain stationary beside it. If security staff use a hand-held wand, ask them to avoid holding it directly over your device for more than a second or two. Inform security staff that you have an implanted cardiac device. Most manufacturers provide a device ID card that shows the make, model, and implant date; carry this when travelling.

Explosive trace detection and X-ray baggage machines do not affect cardiac devices. If you have any concerns specific to your device or destination country’s security procedures, contact your device manufacturer or Cardiac Nurse Specialist before travel.
