Triggered

Refers to an unpleasant and unexpected reminder of past pain or trauma. When we are triggered, we begin to feel emotions related to a trauma that happened to us in the past, even though those events aren’t being talked about directly.

Hypervigilance

A state of heightened alertness in which a person is constantly scanning for signs of danger. Very common after cardiac arrest, survivors may constantly monitor their own heartbeat, startle easily, and be unable to relax. A core feature of PTSD and responds well to trauma-focused therapy and EMDR.
