Can children have an ICD?

Yes. ICDs can be fitted in children and young people, and this is done regularly by specialist paediatric cardiologists. There is no ICD designed exclusively for children, but standard devices can be used safely and are programmed to suit a child’s heart rate and rhythm patterns.

The implant technique is sometimes adapted for younger patients. Leads may be positioned differently to allow for growth, and smaller or subcutaneous ICD designs are increasingly used in younger people where appropriate.

If your child has been referred for an ICD, their care will be managed by a specialist paediatric cardiology team who can advise on the most suitable device and approach. Our page on living with an ICD has further information, and many families in our community have been through this with their children.
