A small implanted device that monitors heart rhythm and delivers electrical impulses to prevent a dangerously slow heart rate. Types include single-chamber, dual-chamber, biventricular (CRT), and leadless. Pacemakers do not treat ventricular fibrillation; cardiac arrest survivors needing both defibrillation and pacing receive a combined ICD device.
