The minimum amount of electrical energy (measured in joules) required to successfully terminate ventricular fibrillation. DFT testing is sometimes performed at the time of ICD implantation to confirm that the device can reliably deliver a shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm. The ICD is programmed to deliver shocks well above the DFT to provide a safety margin.
