Surgical removal of the membranous sac surrounding the heart. It is used in the treatment of chronic constrictive pericarditis and chronic pericardial effusion.

A diagnostic procedure that uses a needle to withdraw fluid from the sac or membrane surrounding the heart (pericardium).
Pericardial Effusion
A collection of fluid in the pericardium (sac around the heart). Such a collection, if it is large, may lead to a buildup of pressure on the heart. This often results in deterioration in its function, leading to low blood pressure or heart failure.
